Order refund rate—
Revenue refund rate—

Formula: Order refund rate = refunded orders ÷ total orders × 100

How to use the Refund Rate Calculator

Compare refunds by order count and revenue amount. Use a consistent order cohort or clearly labelled reporting period.

Formula

Order refund rate = refunded orders ÷ total orders × 100; revenue refund rate = refunded revenue ÷ gross revenue × 100.

Worked example

20 refunded orders out of 500 give 4%. $1,200 refunded from $25,000 gross revenue gives a 4.8% revenue refund rate.

Interpretation and limitations

Both denominators must be positive. Partial refunds and refunds for older orders can make count-based and revenue-based rates differ. The tool does not enforce numerator-versus-denominator consistency.

Refund Rate questions

Why are my two refund rates different?

Refunded orders may have above-average values, or some refunds may be partial. Count and amount measure different effects.

Should I include this month’s refunds for last month’s orders?

For cohort analysis, match refunds to the original orders. For cash reporting, label the period-based metric so it is not mistaken for a cohort rate.
