Average Order Value Calculator

Find average revenue earned per order. Includes a worked example, formula and practical FAQs.

Average order value—

Formula: Average order value = total revenue ÷ number of orders

How to use the Average Order Value Calculator

Find average revenue earned per order. Enter revenue and order count for the same period, channel and refund policy.

Formula

AOV = revenue ÷ orders.

Worked example

$12,000 revenue from 300 orders gives $40 average order value.

Interpretation and limitations

Orders must be positive. Decide consistently whether revenue includes shipping, taxes or refunds. AOV is a mean and can be influenced by a few very large orders.

Average Order Value questions

Is AOV the same as revenue per customer?

No. A customer may place multiple orders. AOV divides revenue by orders, not customers.

Should refunded orders be included?

Choose a consistent gross or net reporting definition. Mixing net revenue with an unrelated order count can distort comparisons.
