How to use the Ecommerce Profit Calculator

Estimate the profit on a batch of online orders. Enter units sold, selling price, unit product cost, shipping cost per unit, total fees and total advertising spend.

Formula

Revenue = units × price; total cost = units × (unit cost + shipping) + fees + ad spend; profit = revenue − total cost.

Worked example

100 units at $30 produce $3,000 revenue. Product cost of $10 and shipping of $3 per unit, plus $100 fees and $500 advertising, produce $1,900 total cost, $1,100 profit and a 36.67% margin.

Interpretation and limitations

Fees and advertising are totals, while product and shipping costs are per unit. Refunds, taxes and overhead are included only if you account for them in the inputs. At zero revenue this tool displays 0% margin as a convention; the mathematical ratio is undefined.

Ecommerce Profit questions

Should advertising be entered per order?

No. Enter the total ad spend for the whole batch; entering a per-order amount understates costs.

Is this accounting net profit?

Only if all relevant expenses are included. Treat the result as contribution after the entered costs when overhead is excluded.
