ROI Calculator
Calculate a simple return on investment from the initial investment and total amount received back. Includes a worked example, formula and practical FAQs.
Formula: ROI (%) = (gain − investment) ÷ investment × 100
How to use the ROI Calculator
Calculate a simple return on investment from the initial investment and total amount received back. Enter the total return including recovered principal in the gain field.
Formula
Net return = total gain − investment; ROI (%) = net return ÷ investment × 100.
Worked example
An investment of $1,000 that returns $1,250 has a $250 net return and 25% ROI.
Interpretation and limitations
Investment must be positive. This is a simple, non-annualized return: it does not model cash-flow timing, compounding or financing. Include relevant costs consistently.
ROI questions
Should gain contain just my profit?
No. The tool subtracts investment from gain. If profit is $250 on a $1,000 investment, enter $1,250 as gain.
Is 25% ROI the same over one month and one year?
The simple percentage is the same, but the time-adjusted performance is not. This calculator does not annualize returns.
