GMROI Calculator

Measure gross margin dollars earned per currency unit invested in average inventory at cost. Includes a worked example, formula and practical FAQs.

GMROI—

Formula: GMROI = gross margin ÷ average inventory cost

How to use the GMROI Calculator

Measure gross margin dollars earned per currency unit invested in average inventory at cost. Enter a gross profit amount, not a percentage.

Formula

GMROI = gross margin amount ÷ average inventory cost.

Worked example

$30,000 gross margin dollars divided by $12,000 average inventory gives 2.5× GMROI.

Interpretation and limitations

Use matching periods and a representative average inventory balance. This is a gross-return measure and does not subtract every operating expense.

GMROI questions

Does 2.5× mean 250% net profit?

No. It means $2.50 of gross margin for each $1 held in average inventory under the selected period and valuation.

Which gross margin input is required?

Enter the currency amount of gross profit. Entering 40 for a 40% margin would be incorrect unless the gross profit actually equals 40 currency units.
