Break-Even Units Calculator
Estimate the minimum whole units required to cover fixed costs. Includes a worked example, formula and practical FAQs.
Formula: Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ (price per unit − variable cost per unit)
How to use the Break-Even Units Calculator
Estimate the minimum whole units required to cover fixed costs. Enter fixed costs for your chosen period, selling price per unit and variable cost per unit.
Formula
Contribution per unit = price − variable cost; break-even units = round up(fixed costs ÷ contribution).
Worked example
Fixed costs of $1,000, a $30 selling price and $18 variable cost give $12 contribution. 1,000 ÷ 12 = 83.33, so 84 whole units are needed, generating $2,520 revenue.
Interpretation and limitations
Price must exceed variable cost. Fixed costs and sales must use the same period. The model assumes one product or a stable weighted-average sales mix.
Break-Even Units questions
Why is the answer rounded up?
83 units contribute $996 and leave a $4 shortfall. 84 units contribute $1,008 and cover the fixed costs.
Are fixed costs charged again per unit?
No. Enter fixed costs once for the period; variable costs belong in the per-unit field.
