CPC, CPM and CTR: How the Three Advertising Metrics Connect

· omnicalc.info

CPC, CPM and CTR describe different parts of the same advertising activity. CPC measures cost per click, CPM measures cost per thousand impressions, and CTR measures clicks relative to impressions. Reading them together helps explain why click costs move.

Use one consistent dataset

Imagine $240 spend, 80,000 impressions and 400 link clicks. CPM is $240 ÷ 80,000 × 1,000 = $3. CTR is 400 ÷ 80,000 × 100 = 0.5%. CPC is $240 ÷ 400 = $0.60.

All three calculations must use the same campaign, dates and click definition. Mixing link clicks in one metric with all engagement clicks in another breaks the relationship.

Derive CPC from CPM and CTR

When CTR is expressed as a percentage such as 0.5, CPC = CPM ÷ (10 × CTR). Here, $3 ÷ (10 × 0.5) = $0.60. When CTR is a decimal, the equivalent formula is CPM ÷ (1,000 × decimal CTR).

The factor of 100 between a percentage and a decimal is a common source of errors. A 0.5% CTR is 0.005 as a decimal, not 0.5.

See what happens when engagement changes

If CPM stays at $3 and CTR rises to 1%, expected CPC falls to $0.30. The same 80,000 impressions would produce 800 clicks at the same $240 spend.

That is an arithmetic comparison with CPM held constant. In a real auction, a different creative or audience may change both CPM and CTR, so isolate the assumptions before attributing the improvement to one metric.

Follow the clicks to their outcome

Suppose the first 400 clicks produce 20 purchases. Cost per purchase is $12. A second campaign generates 800 clicks for the same spend but only 8 purchases, giving a $30 cost per purchase.

The second campaign has cheaper clicks but a weaker purchase outcome. Better CTR can reflect curiosity rather than purchase intent, so the lowest CPC is not automatically the best business result.

Questions to ask when reports disagree

Are impressions served or viewable? Are clicks all clicks or outbound clicks? Are the currency, date range and attribution settings aligned? Do not compare ratios until their components match.

Use the CPC, CPM and CTR calculators to reconcile the dataset, then check CPA for the action that matters.
