Break-Even ROAS Calculator

Estimate the advertising revenue multiple needed to cover ad spend from the pre-ad contribution margin. Includes a worked example, formula and practical FAQs.

Break-even ROAS—
Equivalent revenue return—

Formula: Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ contribution margin rate

How to use the Break-Even ROAS Calculator

Estimate the advertising revenue multiple needed to cover ad spend from the pre-ad contribution margin. Enter the percentage of revenue remaining after non-ad variable costs.

Formula

Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ (contribution margin / 100).

Worked example

At a 40% contribution margin, break-even ROAS is 1 ÷ 0.40 = 2.5×, or 250%. $250 revenue contributes $100 to cover $100 advertising.

Interpretation and limitations

The accepted margin is greater than 0% and below 100%. This simplified threshold excludes fixed overhead unless your margin assumption already accounts for it.

Break-Even ROAS questions

Should I include ad spend in the margin?

No. Use a pre-ad margin, otherwise advertising is counted twice in this model.

Why does a lower margin require higher ROAS?

Less of each revenue dollar is available for advertising. At 20% margin, the threshold increases to 5×.
